The Kurtzhaler Brothers, The Straw Hat Factory in Domžale

Prior to arriving in Domžale in 1868, the Kurzthaler brothers were involved in the straw hat business in Marostica, Italy, and in Wels, Austria. They bought Pavli’s Inn in Zgornje Domžale, which stood alone surrounded by farmland and was therefore suitable for the bold planning and construction of new factory buildings. There they built a straw hat factory and established a company named “The Kurzthaler Brothers”.

The factory achieved its greatest progress in the years 1909 and 1910, when an electric steam powered plant, a new dye works, a bleaching plant and auxiliary buildings were constructed. In 1912 and 1913, a modern residential villa was built on the other side of the street, opposite the factory. The company operated until 1931, when the Tyrolean companies merged into one larger company in order to reduce operating costs. Its name was Tovarna klobukov in slamnikov (The Hat Factory) Ladstätter, Kurzthaler, Oberwalder, Stemberger, d.z.o.z.

In 1922, 82 men and 60 women, 8 leaders of workers and the leadership were employed. They made 60.000 straw hats, and the capacity of factory was 250.000.  They were selling them only over the then kingdom. The braids were imported from China and Japan.

The factory stopped operating in 1932. At its location, there is currently a large car park.
