Harackova slamnikarska tovarna

Harackova slamnikarska tovarna

Do tal jo je podrl in sezidal ondi slamnikarsko tovarno. Mladi Harack in Moldovan sta sedaj v Zg.

Harack’s Straw Hat Factory

Franc Harack, a wealthy and respected straw hat trader in Vienna, bought the house of Jacob Peterlin in 1872. He knocked it down to the ground and built a straw hat whose caretaker was his uncle Moldovan. These two exchanged this house with a house in Upper Domžale, owned by innkeeper Ivana Müller, married to a former officer Pichler. From here, the name of the restaurant at “Pihler” in Stob. Young Harack and Moldovan then made a straw hat factory in Upper Domžale. But there was also no luck either. The spoiled and loose son wasted everything and one day he shot himself at Slon Hotel in Ljubljana.

Janez Riedl, born in 1833 in Grasslitz, Czech Republic, bought Repar’s house in Upper Domžale in 1874 and then built a large and beautiful straw hat factory for the time back then, and later in Lower Domžale. He married Marija Cerar. The company was not kept because there was no money available.

Rudolf Mayer, born in 1849 in Grasslitz, Czech Republic, initially led Franc Harack’s straw hat factory. Later, he bought Vilar’s house in Lower Domžale and made his own factory in it, which, however, ceased to exist with his death. He was married to Slovene Marija Mejač.

In recent times, Tirolec Tegischer Štefan, born in 1865 in St. Veit, arranged a straw hat factory in Upper Domžale. However, since he had only rented a house, after the overthrow of 1918, he was deprived of the right to execute the straw hat making in Domžale.

In all the Tyrolean factories mentioned above, Slovenian labourers were employed all the time. But they regularly occupied the leading positions with their relatives.
